This sturdy and practical modern eye model is based on the original Opthalmotropes which were devised in the nineteenth century. Many static models are widely used to teach the principles of eye movement but fail to adequately demonstrate the correlation between muscle and movement. With this model each intrinsic eye muscle has a labelled cord which when pulled moves a muscle acurately causeing the eye to move in a prescribed manor. The model has suction feet that keep it secure while the muscles are activated. The angle of the eye in relation to the orbit is faithfully reproduced so that the superior and inferior recti and the two obliques are activated accurately. This allows easy demonstrations of the plain upward and downward gaze.
This model was originally designed by Mr Robert Whitaker MA. MD. MChir. FRCS, a retired surgeon and now assistant clinical anatomist in Cambridge, and was subsequently developed by Pharmabotics Ltd.
