ADAM the Advanced Simulator is a simulator for use in the catheter lab, under real endovascular environment. It is a real life simulator which allows for training in conditions very similar to reality. Unlike most currently available simulators, ADAM is NOT a computer simulator.
This endovascular simulator could be used by physicians to master any specific endovascular procedure, or by endovascular training centres to organise hands-on training courses.
The simulator consists of a fiberglass body which has the dimensions of a human body. The fiberglass construction makes the simulator hard and resistant to damage, while in the same time light-weight.
The fiberglass body when placed under fluoroscopy gives an image of skeleton and son tissues very similar to that seen when a real human body is imaged by fluoroscopy. Just like in real life, the arterial tree is radiolucent.
Catheters, wires, balloons, and various endovascular tools are introduced through a sheath inserted in the groin of the simulator Any endovascular procedure could then be performed just like in real life, using contrast material to opacify specific segments of the arterial tree.
The simulator has a ''circulation'' (water), running in various arteries at velocity similar to that in human arterial tree. This allows for the constant wash-out of injected contrast material.
Images of various segments of arterial tree could be obtained using various imaging techniques such as fluoroscopy, digital subtradion, and cine-angio.
Procedures could also be performed under road mapping.
Examples of endovascular procedures which could be performed using the simulator are endless.
They include acquiring basic skills of diagnostic procedures, performing aortic cross-over) selective iliac, renal, carotid, subclavian catheterization, to complex procedures such as carotid stetting of complex carotid lesion using neuro-protedion devices.
The arterial tree'' of the simulator is easily exchangeable. The arterial tree is enclosed in a tidy sheet of rubber The sheet can be easily removed from the fiberglass body and exchanged for another. Each sheet contains a specific
design, There are many designs of arterial lesions varying in degrees of difficulty, to allow for graded training. For example there are different argles of the renal artery which makes renal procedures easier or more difficult according to the requirements of the trainee. There are also endless designs of arterial stenosis in any arterial segment to satisfy for training requirements. In addition a sheet containing the venous tree is also available.
This simulator is an ideal tool to master endovascular techniques in an environment very similar to real life environment. It gives a real life tactile feeling of catheter / wire manipulations to achieve various endovascular tasks. The behavior of various catheters and wires in the simulator's arterial tree is very similar to the human being.
Not only does it provide the operator with experience in the use of endovascular tools, but also provides experience with the use of the oath lab equipment (radiographic equipment and oath lab table), in it's various modes ice. fluoroscopy, digital subtraction, road mapping, cine angio.

Its a real substitute to training on anesthetised animals. It is far superior to training on computer simulators, because it gives experience with the use of real life catheters, wires, balloons etc... under real life oath lab conditions. In addition it is a small fraction of the cost of computer simulators, and requires minimal maintenance.
